Basic Muzzleloader Hunting Tips

muzzleloader tips

Some states only have a two week modern gun season for deer. Two weeks of using a modern firearm isn’t a lot of time for someone who only hunts with a rifle. Although, I do start hunting in September with a bow and can do that all the way through January, some folks are only gun hunters.

Having experience with using a muzzleloader gives hunters the extra opportunity to kill a deer without the need for any archery skills. Muzzleloaders these days are fairly easy to use once you figure it out.

Here are a few tips on how you start hunting using a muzzleload:

  1. As with any firearm, make sure the gun is clean and well taken care of. Look for any cracks in the stock or barrel.
  2. Make sure to oil down the gun to protect it’s finish and clean out the barrel. Be careful not to over oil as that can cause more blockage issues and improperly firing. Once oiled, give it a quick dry patch to get any excess oil from the barrel.
  3. Learn to load the gun properly. Read the manual, watch Youtube videos and read tutorials online.
  4. Use bullets with a ballistic tip. Using these tips give the gun & shooter more accurate shots. Be sure to use the correct ramrod to push the bullet into the barrel so you don’t damage the tip.
  5. Shoot, shoot, shoot. This is the only way you’re going to get better and more accurate shots.

These are very basic tips to think about when using a muzzleloader. Read your manual all the way through to learn how to insert the bullet into the barrel.

Good luck hunting using a muzzleloader!
